Save the Date cards are a popular addition to the wedding retinue. They can set the tone of the wedding, giving a preview of the invitations to follow or they can be whimsical or wacky.
Ideas range from magnets (handy) to puzzles (fun) to postcards (great idea for destination weddings).
But are they necessary or just an additional expense?
If you're having a destination wedding, it's highly recommended that you send out save the dates as soon as possible. Guests need to make arrangements for vacation time then book their tickets and hotel rooms. The more time they have, the better.
Otherwise, it's a nice addition but not required.
And, believe it or not, emailing a Save the Date is perfectly legal to the etiquette police (invites must still be mailed, however). A simple note out to all your guests is the easiest and cheapest method.
